Trade & Labour Unions Banking operations paralysed in Dakshin Kannada Our Bureau
Mangalore , Aug. 24 BANKING operations came to a halt in Dakshina Kannada district on Tuesday as employees of public sector banks went on a strike in response to a call by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The forum is seeking revision of employees' wages. In spite of heavy rains in the morning, more than 500 employees of various banks staged a demonstration in front of the Head Office of Corporation Bank here. Even the employees of the old generation private bank Karnataka Bank Ltd participated in the demonstration. Addressing the demonstrators, the Joint General Secretary of the All-India Bank Officers' Confederation, Mr T.R. Bhat, said that there was disparity in the wage structure between the employees of the public sector banks and those in private sector banks. While a Chief Executive Officer of a private bank got more than Rs 75,000 a month as salary, a Managing Director of a public sector bank received less than Rs 50,000 a month. In spite of this disparity in wages, employees of the public sector banks were asked to provide service on par with the private sector banks, he said. The UFBU would meet in Mumbai on Wednesday to chalk out further course of action, he added. Strike total in Karnataka The Secretary of the Karnataka Pradesh Bank Employees' Federation, Mr P.R. Karanth, told Business Line that the strike was total in Karnataka State.
