Axalto to launch dual-mode SIM cards

SMART-CARD vendor, Axalto, plans to launch a dual-mode SIM card to enable customers to seamlessly switch between GSM and CDMA networks.

Announcing this, the Axalto President for Asia, Mr Teck Lee Tan, said the card would enable easier roaming and services to end-customers. The company was looking at an expansion in the credit and debit card market in India, expected smart cards to be increasingly used in the driving licence and vehicle registration system and at a growing access-control market within corporates. "We are talking to an operator who is trying to deploy a higher-end card, Mr Tan said, adding that corporate usage and tailored applications are high on operators' agenda.

With 30 million smart card subscribers in the country, the Indian market is set to grow at about 40 per cent, Mr Tan said, albeit on a smaller base (China, the other growing market has over 300 million subscribers.

Axalto also announced the SIMagine 2005 contest, a GSM and a Java card developer and eGate Open 2005 contests.
