IPR IPR courts needed to curb counterfeit: Govt Our Bureau
New Delhi , Aug. 24 THE Government on Tuesday stressed the need to set up IPR courts for speedy disposal of cases and to check counterfeit. The Minister of State for Law and Justice, Mr K. Venkatapathy, said such courts would allow judicial officers and enforcing agencies to gain specialised knowledge in this area. "The focused approach can go a long way in dealing with counterfeiting and piracy," the Minister said at a seminar on `Intellectual Property Infringement-Piracy/Counterfeiting', organised here by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). Meanwhile, the Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, Mr E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said the Government was keen to forge partnerships with enforcement agencies and the industry to curb counterfeit. He said the Government had taken substantial measures to modernise the intellectual property administration in the country in view of the significance assumed by intellectual property in the context of globalisation and liberalisation of the economy and the increasing stress on innovation and creativity. "These include both legislative and administrative initiatives to create a modern and facilitative set up," said Mr Elangovan. Mr Elangovan said pirated products posed a serious health and safety risk to the consumers.
