THE Parliamentary Standing Committee has asked the Department of Coal to prepare a long-term production plan till 2025 in view of the expected shortage in coal production.
The committee, which submitted its report to the Parliament on Wednesday, stated that, "There will be a yawning gap of more than 95 million tonnes in the next five to ten year in the demand and supply of coal that is required for core sectors such as power generation, steel, aluminium and infrastructure."
Keeping this in mind, the committee has expressed grave concern because in the absence of a vision document, the department is not in a position to plan and act in order to meet the future coal demand.
It has urged the department to prepare a vision document for coal for the next 20-25 years.
In order to prepare a vision document, the committee has recommended that the department should constitute a taskforce for holding consultation and discussions with experts and industry at large without any further delay.
