Visakhapatnam , Aug. 25

THE Visakhapatnam Steel Plant on Wednesday handed over 1400 acres of land at Kanithi, Pedagantyada and Nellimukku villages in Visakhapatnam district to the Commissioner of Ports, Andhra Pradesh, for the development of a minor port at Gangavaram, according to a press release issued by the company.

Mr K. Mangapathi Rao, Commissioner of Ports, signed the documents on behalf of the State Government and Mr P.K. Mohapatra, Assistant General Manager, on behalf of the steel plant.

Earlier, the steel plant had taken possession of 700 acres in K. Kotapadu mandal from the State Government for compensatory afforestation. Besides, the State Government had also paid VSP Rs 20.02 crore for the exchange of land.

The Union Cabinet had taken a decision in 2002 authorising the steel plant to give the land to the State Government for the purpose of developing the Gangavaram port.

There was a proposal earlier to develop a captive port at Gangavaram for the use of the steel plant, but the Telugu Desam Government had rejected it.

The Government had accorded the project to a consortium consisting ofthe Hyderabad-based DVS Raju Company and Dubai Port International.

The project is still in the initial stages, as only the land acquisition has been completed.
