THE All India Flat Tape Manufacturers' Association, a group of synthetic woven sack manufacturers, has taken umbrage at the statement by a West Bengal MP during a debate in the Lok Sabha on August 18 in which synthetic bags were said to have been made of "imported polyesters" having a lot of additives.
The MP was arguing against any dilution of the Jute Packaging Mandatory Act, 1997, under which the use of jute bags had been made mandatory for foodgrains and sugar.
In a press release, the association said that woven sacks were 100 per cent indigenously made from HDPE/PP granules. It added that the supply of granules was well in excess of demand.
Challenging the claim made by the jute industry that around, "40 lakh people were engaged in jute cultivation and industry", the release cited a study by Tata Economic Consultancy Services in 1997 where the figure had been put at a maximum of 15 lakh.
