Petroleum MPs urge Centre to clear Kochi LNG project Our Bureau
Kochi , Aug. 26 MEMBERS of Parliament from Kerala have sought the intervention of the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Mr Mani Shankar Aiyar, for clearing the deadlock in commencing construction of the proposed LNG terminal here. In a memorandum submitted to the Union Minister in New Delhi on Thursday by Mr K. Chandran Pillai, Member (Rajya Sabha), the MPs said that the Petronet LNG Ltd (PLL) had advanced considerably in setting up the project, got around 40 clearances besides obtaining the land required. Whereas, the NTPC is yet to begin all these process. "Thus, the immediate requirement is that Petronet shall be given a green signal to go ahead with the construction". They said that pricing of re-gassified LNG was being considered by the Tariff Commission and therefore there need not be any anxiety over the price of gas to be levied from customers. They also apprised the Minister that a recent study by a major consulting organisation had established that even without NTPC, Kayamkulam, there is sufficient demand in Kerala for regassified natural gas to justify the terminal with the minimum economic capacity of 2.5 million tonne per annum (MMTPA). Thus, even if NTPC is not inclined to take gas from the terminal at Cochin demand from other industries can sustain the terminal, they said. Currently in Kerala the scope is limited to only one terminal of minimum economic capacity of 2.5 million tonne. In the present situation "we may be able to find consumers only for a single terminal of minimum economic capacity." And there are two proposals, one by Petronet and the other by NTPC. The proposal of the latter came up later as a part of the expansion of their power plant by 1950 MW. This indecision as to who shall put up the terminal is delaying the construction of the terminal for the past one year, they added.
