New Products & Services New fabric finish from Resil Chemicals Our Bureau
Chennai , Aug. 26 IMAGINE a shirt that repels mosquitoes, curtains with built-in air freshness, fabrics that moisturise or carpets that smell fresh when you walk on them. Fabrics that do all this will soon be in the market. These are fabrics that have on them millions of microcapsules, containing fragrances and essences. Mr M.S. Vijayan, Joint Managing Director, Resil Chemicals, which makes the microcapsules, said that the company has introduced this finish called the sensory perception technology (SPT) in India in technical collaboration with the Woolmark Company, Australia. He said that the use of this finish on garments by a brand would give it a distinct edge. Resil Chemicals works with clients and helps them derive the specific finish. The microcapsules are attached to the fabric surface during the wet-finish stage, he said. The microcapsules are miniature containers, of polymeric coating or melamine shell that prevent the contents from evaporation, oxidation and contamination until its release. The technology ensures that over a million microcapsules per square centimetre can be fixed on to the fabric. When the fabric is used the microcapsules break releasing the droplets of oil, to produce the effect. The microcapsules are activated only by actual usage. The garments are machine washable and can withstand temperatures up to 130 degrees Centigrade. The company will soon launch four finishes such as Aloe Vera, fragrances - rose, sandalwood, lavender and lemon - and vitamin E and insect repellent. The factory in Bangalore produces about 500 tonnes of SPT products a month and also has about 150 other products for the garment industry. The company, which also deals in silicones, has a turnover of Rs 50 crore. Exports make up 20 per cent of the turnover.
