Industry Associations Nasscom mulls Kolkata office Our Bureau
Kolkata , Aug. 27 NASSCOM may set up an office in Kolkata, thanks to West Bengal's growing importance in the nation's IT arena. According to Mr Kiran Karnik, President of Nasscom, the industry body was evaluating the need to set up an office in Kolkata. The Delhi-headquartered Nasscom has already opened offices in places such as Mumbai and Hyderabad. Speaking to newspersons today at a conference called jointly by Nasscom and Businessworld to announce details of Infocomm 2004, Mr Karnik said that it would also be Nasscom's endeavour to schedule its board meeting in the city during Infocomm 2004 so that leaders in the IT industry could be present. He said that the annual Infocomm Conference & Exhibition, which would be in its third year this year and is organised jointly by Nasscom and Businessworld, had greatly facilitated West Bengal's visibility in the nation's IT map. "This is already a major national event but it will be important to expand its sphere of influence and take it outside the country." He added that Kolkata must emerge as the IT hub of the entire Eastern and North-Eastern regions. Mr Karnik had a word of praise for the talent pool and infrastructure that was available here, the low cost of operations and the low attrition rates. Infocomm 2004 would be held from December 1-5 and the theme for this year is `Harnessing ICT for global competitiveness'. It would be inaugurated by the Minister for Communications & Information Technology, Mr Dayanidhi Maran.
