THE Government has modified the guidelines for import of rough marble blocks and slabs to enhance the import entitlement of such blocks for those processing units that imported these items when they were under the special import licence (SIL) list.
After SIL was abolished in 2001, import of rough marble blocks and slabs was moved to the restricted list.
The Directorate-General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) has now modified its March 2002 policy circular, which outlined the guidelines for import of rough marble blocks and slabs to specify that the "value of licence to be issued in a year be limited to 50 per cent of the total cost, insurance and freight (CIF) value of imports made by them during the years i.e., 1999-00 and 2000-01, when this item was under SIL scheme".
Sources said that the policy modification would imply that processing units in the country that had imported rough marble blocks during the period when the item was under SIL would now be allowed larger import entitlement.
The DGFT held that the import entitlement of rough marble blocks have been reviewed on account of the representations received from various associations of marble manufacturers and processors.
