THE Centre will draft a policy to make groundwater recharge mandatory for Coca-Cola India, PepsiCo and other aerated drink manufacturers and also industries depending on groundwater resources.
A policy paper on the subject is expected to be ready by the end of this fiscal year.
The Centre will also form an industry council, comprising the three apex chambers, namely, FICCI, CII and Assocham, and other industry bodies to promote rainwater harvesting in industry and business. The council will be formed in September.
Talking to newspersons on the sidelines of a FICCI seminar on `Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge,' the Union Minister for Water Resources, Mr P.R. Dasmunshi, said discussions were on with State Governments to enforce judicious use of groundwater by industries.
Stating that the regulations would vary from region to region depending upon the groundwater reserves, Mr Dasmunshi said the Centre had already started communicating with the States on these issues.
