Society & Development Money & Banking - Foreign Banks Corporate sponsorship: HSBC identifies education, environment Our Bureau
Kolkata , Aug. 28 AS a part of its corporate social responsibility programme, Hongkong & Shanghai Banking Corporation Ltd (HSBC) has identified education and environment as the two sectors for corporate sponsorship. According to Mr Ramnath Krishnan, regional head - eastern India of HSBC, these are two important areas, which could have a strong impact on the future of the country. He was addressing the inaugural session of a seminar on corporate social responsibility organised by the Centre for Social Responsibility. Mr Viren J. Shah, Governor of West Bengal, said that creation of wealth and maintenance of a free and just society was essentially the two sides of the same coin because both required broad-based systems of accountability. "The corporations and other organisations are being more and more alive to the prevailing social and economic conditions while pursuing their business goals," Mr Shah said. Mr Sumit Dabriwal, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director of High Land Park (a real estate developer), said the general feeling among people was that the working atmosphere is this sector was mostly untidy and unhealthy. He felt that real estate developers should create partnerships with pollution control boards so to help them carry out their social responsibility in a better manner.
