Bengal Chamber organises metal seminar on Nov. 4

Our Bureau

KOLKATA: The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organising Metal Seminar 2004, the second annual international conference on iron and steel on November 4-5.

According to Mr Biswadip Gupta, President of the chamber, the theme of the conference this year is `Iron & steel - Is India the next giant?'

The seminar is part of a series of initiatives taken by the chamber to facilitate industrial growth in the eastern region, especially iron and steel, in which the East has a natural advantage.

Besides domestic steel majors such as SAIL, Tata Steel, RINL, Jindal, Ispat and Essar, the seminar will have participants from among the three largest steel companies in the world - Arcelor, Ispat International of the LNM Group and Posco, Mr Gupta told newspersons.

While China consumes 240 million tonnes of steel annually, India consumes only 35 million tonnes. The seminar hopes to facilitate a growth in domestic steel consumption.

This year, the chamber will confer the Lifetime Achievement Award on Mr O.P. Jindal for his contribution to the iron and steel industry, according to Mr Gupta.
