`Indian IT industry must ensure data protection'

Mumbai , Aug. 29

WITH credit card processing, insurance and medical record management increasingly performed in the country, it has become imperative for the Indian software industry to ensure data protection. If Indian (software) service providers fail to provide data security and protection chances are it might lead to this becoming a non-tariff trade barrier.

"Data protection has become an important issue and this needs to be addressed," Mr Jerry Rao, Chairman, Nasscom and Chairman and CEO MphasiS Ltd said at the valedictory function of the second annual Cyber Safety Week organised by Nasscom and Mumbai Police here on Saturday.

Leaders from the Indian IT industry urged domestic software firms to put in stringent security practices to allay fears about violation of customer privacy and data security. Other issues which needed to be tackled included cyber crimes such as cyber fraud, e-mail scams, viruses and cyber-terrorism. In this regard, "the police also have a very important role to play in tackling cyber crime," Mr Rao said.

Interestingly the Mumbai Cyber Lab has trained 108 police personnel so far. The objective of the Mumbai Cyber Lab is to help provide training to the police personnel, create an interface between the police and people, spread awareness about cyber crime and related issues, as also interact with the corporate, financial institutions and educational institutions through discussion forums, workshops etc. on cyber safety, cyber crime and cyber laws.
