Visakhapatnam , Aug. 29

THE State Government will soon take up work on the mega Polavaram project on the Godavari which will be a great boon to the Godavari districts and the north-coastal districts of Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam, the Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, has announced.

During his `Rajiv palle bata' (tour of rural areas) in Visakhapatnam district on Sunday, he said the north-coastal districts would derive immense benefit out of the Polavaram canal, the administrative clearance for which would be obtained soon.

On the controversy over the removal of illegal farm power connections, he said his Government was not doing it in any drastic or arbitrary manner. "These connections are placing a heavy burden on the transformers and the whole power distribution system faces collapse, if we do not take such a step.

"However, we are sanctioning 50,000 new farm power connections every year and we will try to regularise some of these unauthorised power connections in deserving cases. The small and marginal farmers will be given due consideration," he promised.

He said his Government was committed to providing free power supply to agricultural pumpsets, but it was the TDP leaders who were making all attempts to politicise the issue and disrupt the scheme.

He said a welfare commission would be formed for the farmers and Rs 500 crore would be borrowed from the Nabard to develop the lands in the State. He said three lakh credit cards would be given to weavers in the State and cheap credit, up to the limit of Rs 25,000, would be made available.
