Floriculture Flower auction centre to be set up at Gurgaon Rajesh Ahuja
Chandigarh , Aug. 30 A MODERN flower auction centre would be set up at Gurgaon to boost the upcoming flower industry and diversification programme of the agriculture sector. An official spokesman said here on Monday that the Chief Minister, Mr Om Prakash Chautala, had accorded approval to the project. Flowers, being a perishable commodity, required efficient post-harvest management and marketing. As Gurgaon is adjacent to the international airport, it would prove to be of help in the export of flowers. The spokesman added that according to an estimate, the Indian domestic market had a consumption of flowers worth Rs 60 crore and in the international market, it was Rs 100 crore per annum. The major buyers of flowers were in the UK, the US, Germany, France, Japan and Middle East. The setting up of the flower auction centre would ensure organised trade and prevent deterioration of the quality of flowers. It would also help in raising the socio-economic status of those farmers interested in taking up the cultivation of flowers. He said that out of a total area of 4,082 hectares under floriculture in the State, Gurgaon district alone had an area of 1,952 hectares under this head. However, floriculture had been adopted by the farmers in all the 19 districts of the State. The key flowers grown by the farmers included Rose, Gladiolus, Marigold, Tube Rose, Chrysanthemum, Garbers and Carnation.
