Standards & Benchmarks Agri-Biz & Commodities - Silk Now, a quality assurance stamp for silk products Our Bureau
Mumbai , Aug. 30 INDIA, the largest consumer and second largest producer of silk in the world, will soon have its own quality benchmark - the Silk Mark. The Silk Mark Organisation of India (SMOI), a recently registered body sponsored by the Central Silk Board under the Ministry of Textiles, on Monday launched the symbol that will help identify pure silk products and market Indian silk in the domestic and international markets. This stamp of quality assurance would be similar to the `Woolmark' and `Seal of Cotton' that have become trusted stamps of quality for pure wool and cotton products, respectively. The organisation will soon launch a publicity campaign to raise awareness about the symbol. "Consumers across the country have sought implementation of quality standards for silk products," said Mr P. Joy Oommen, Member-Secretary and CEO, Central Silk Board. "Greater visibility for this symbol will reassure consumers who are likely to encourage traders and dealers to register as users of the Silk Mark." He added that the Government had allocated Rs 5 crore for implementation of various development schemes for silk. This is in addition to the Rs 150 crore allocated for R&D and quality assurance in silk manufacture. "The process of globalisation has spurred commodities producers, including silk farmers, to take a supply chain view of their produce, especially if it involved value addition for the end-consumer," said Ms Kiran Dhingra, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Textiles. Under the Silk Mark Scheme, members of SMOI will be authorised to use the Silk Mark logo on products made out of 100 per cent natural silk. The logo, in the form of a hologram, each individually numbered and coded, will be printed and supplied to the authorised users by SMOI.
