RPG gets cyclosporin patent

Our Bureau

MUMBAI: RPG Life Sciences Ltd has been granted a patent for its novel drug delivery system (NDDS) in cyclosporin formulations by the Registrar of Patents, Republic of South Africa.

This is the first of the patents to be granted in the national phase for this formulation's patent application through the Patent Co-operation Treaty route.

Cyclosporin is an immunosuppressant drug used in the treatment of patients who have undergone organ transplantation.

Mr Murli Ramachandran, Managing Director of the company, said: "We are very optimistic about the South African prospect. The drug has passed clinical tests of bio-equivalency and switchability and is now being prescribed widely by nephrologists in India."

The company has five manufacturing facilities spread over Navi Mumbai, Ankleshwar and Pune, apart from a modern R&D facility for bulk and formulation development.
