CII-Kerala calls for conciliatory bid to tackle hazardous waste

Our Bureau

`Confrontation in any manner between the stakeholders will not solve environmental concerns.'

Kochi , Aug. 31

CII-Kerala has called for a doctrine of partnership between industry, NGOs, experts, environmentalists, pollution control board and the Government to involve and work together in monitoring, preventing and minimising hazardous waste generation.

Confrontation in any manner between the stakeholders will not solve environmental concerns, the CII said in a statement while responding to a recent closure notices issued by the Kerala PCB to various units in the State.

Keeping in mind the principles of natural justice and the larger interests of the industry, the statement said, the PCB ought to have provided sufficient time for the industry to comply with the regulations rather than ordering immediate closure.

The recent development has actually called for an urgent need to institutionalise a framework for participatory approach involving all stakeholders such as NGOs, Government and industry in creating a road map for minimising the generation, its proper handling and disposal of hazardous waste with a view to safeguarding the environmental degradation. CII believes in synchronising the industry with an environmental sensitivity and local community. It would create the platform for ongoing discussions with all the stakeholders towards a sustainable development model.

CII in the State has been proactive in creating awareness and disseminating information regarding the various international conventions and its compliance. The Supreme Court Monitoring Committee had directed to set up a Local Area Environment Committee (LAEC) for restoring the life of the Periyar River. The LAEC is a participatory process involving industry representatives, PCB officials and NGOs. The environment committee is a step in the right direction, which goes with premise of participatory approach.

CII also called upon the Greens, PCB officials, industry and the Government to support its activities by participating and contributing to the framework. The participatory process is ongoing and CII would involve all the stakeholders.
