Australia emerging major destination for Indian students

Our Bureau

Kolkata , Sept. 1

THE number of Indian students going to Australia for under graduate and post graduate studies is expected to go up by 15-20 per cent in the current calendar year, according to Mr Ravi L. Singh, Managing Director of Global Reach, an education consultant which accounts for most of eastern India's student referrals to Australia. Addressing a news conference held here to announce the opening of Global Reach's second office at Salt Lake here, Mr Singh said that, from less than 500 students in the 1990s, the number was expected to touch 20,000 by the end of 2004. In 2001, the total number stood at 10,000.

Mr Singh said that there had been a decrease in the number of students going to the US for higher studies on account of various reasons. Instead, students were interested in pursuing higher education in Australia because of the cost-advantage and on account of the fact that those travelling to Australia on student visas were permitted to work off campus for up to 20 hours a week.

He said Global Reach advises and guides students who wish to study in universities in Australia, New Zealand and the UK.
