Frequent changes in textile quota policy resented

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept.1

APPAREL exporters claim that there is a pronounced gap between the Union Government's aim to promote exports and the situation on the ground.

At a press conference here, office bearers of the Apparels and Handloom Exporters Association identified obstacles to growth. The main obstacle is the frequent change in the quota policy without consultation and advance notice, said the association's President, Mr Nariman F. Mogrelia.

Mr Mogrelia identified a recent change in the quota policy (system that governs textile exports) made by the Government as an example.

He said a "drastic" change has been made without consultation, thereby, making functioning difficult for exporters.

Other than the Government's functioning, the association's members complained about the difficult business environment in India.

The recent workers' strike in Chennai port, and the strike by truckers last week were given as examples.
