National maritime commission on cards

Visakhapatnam , Sept. 1

THE Government is planning to set up a national maritime commission to protect the country's maritime interests in an integrated manner and the modalities for it are being worked out, Admiral Arun Prakash, Chief of the Naval Staff, has said.

At a press conference here on Wednesday, after visiting the Eastern Naval Command, he said several agencies were involved in dealing with maritime matters and the Government had accepted in principle the need for such a commission to achieve co-ordination. "We expect a decision on the matter shortly," he said.

He said the share of the Navy in the total defence budget had gradually risen from 12 per cent-13 per cent to 16 per cent-17 per cent and "We hope it will touch the 20 per cent mark." Currently, however, the budgetary allocations were adequate to carry out the Navy's plans.
