Names shortlisted for top slots of CIL subsidiaries

Badal Sanyal

Kolkata , Sept. 2

THE Public Enterprises Selection Board (PESB) has short-listed 10 directors from all subsidiaries of Coal India Ltd (CIL) as successors to the Chairmen & Managing Directors of five CIL subsidiaries, where the incumbent CMDs have either retired or will retire in the next six months.

The directors have been selected after interviewing last week a fairly good number of "technically" eligible senior CIL executives.

The subsidiaries where new CMDs will be appointed are: Eastern Coalfields Ltd (ECL), Central Coalfields Ltd (CCL), Western Coalfields Ltd (WCL), Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd (MCL) and the Central Mine Planning & Design Institute.

Although two directors were selected for each subsidiary, the procedure followed by the PESB ensures the appointment of the person whose name tops the list for each subsidiary.

The second name is kept in the panel to meet any exigency.

It is learnt from authoritative sources that Mr Deepak Chakraborty, Director (technical) of ECL, is the number one choice for the post of CMD of the subsidiary where he is now. The same status is enjoyed by Mr R.P. Ritolia, Director (technical) of ECL, for CCL; Mr G.S. Chugh, Director (technical) of CMPDI, for WCL; Mr A. Sharma, Director (technical) of WCL, for MCL; and Mr S. Choudhary for CMPDI, who is a director in the same company.

Meanwhile, PESB has initiated moves to select a new Chairman and Director (technical) for CIL.

Mr Sashi Kumar, Director (marketing) of CIL, is at present officiating as acting Chairman.

The incumbent Director (technical), Mr M.K. Sinha, will retire in November.
