Panel to decide on fertiliser subsidy today

THE Committee of Secretaries headed by the Cabinet Secretary will meet on Friday to decide on increasing the subsidy on phosphoric acid imports by the fertiliser manufacturers for the current financial year.

Last year the subsidy was calculated on the basis of a purchase price of $356 per tonne from the international market.

This year the fertiliser industry has entered into a contract with the suppliers for a price of $398 per tonne on grounds that the prices of raw materials have increased sharply.

This will result in an increased subsidy outgo during the current fiscal.
