World Coconut Day focuses on crop potential

Kochi , Sept. 2

WORLD Coconut Day was observed here on Thursday with the objective of focusing world attention on the crop's potential and encouraging investment in the sector.

The Coconut Development Board (CDB) also conducted a one-day awareness seminar, dealing with `Coconut Production, Protection and Processing technologies' and `Coconut Products in Human Nutrition.'Papers were presented on Sustainable technologies for coconut production, potential market for organic foods with special reference to coconut, quality standards for coconut oil and copra, coconut oil as an automobile lubricant and products from sweet toddy. Presentations were also made on coconut in ayurveda, anti-thrombotic property of tender coconut water, protective effect of tender coconut water on liver, health benefits of coconut protein, antioxidants and the wound-healing effect of virgin coconut oil and biochemical properties of heated coconut oil.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mr Mathew C. Kunnumkal, Principal Secretary (Agriculture), Kerala. The sessions were chaired by Mr V.T. Markose, former Chief Coconut Development Officer (CCDO), CDB.
