E-Governance Intel `intends' to partner Bengal Our Bureau
Kolkata , Sept. 2 AS part of its corporate plans to have a larger footprint in the eastern region, Intel Technology India Pvt Ltd has announced its "intention" to partner the West Bengal Government with a view to strengthening the IT infrastructure in the State. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday to unveil Intel's plans for eastern India, Mr G.B. Kumar, Intel's Director (Sales), South Asia, said the company was already involved in education projects of some state governments. In West Bengal, too, Intel would like to partner in education and e-governance projects. Already, Intel was working with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, on research projects in the VLSI (Very Large Systems Integration) arena. It has also provided a curriculum grant to Jadavpur University for creating curriculum on CAD for VLSI design. "We will also continue to educate and evangelise PC benefits and usage to college and university students," Mr Kumar said, and added that Intel would reach out for more coverage in the eastern region, sign on for channel memberships and enhance retail coverage. The idea was to educate and grow the size of the market pie instead of looking at the company's revenue growth in terms of percentages. While talks with the West Bengal Government are yet to be initiated, Intel would seek to "accelerate adoption of leading edge technology, provide assistance in education and e-governance projects and also provide assistance in complex projects, the likes of which we have already done in other parts of the world." According to him, Intel was focussed on facilitating growth in IT consumption in the country. "If the usage of computers goes up, so will sales of our microprocessors," he said and added that the company was also educating consumers on the benefits of computerisation with a view to growing the domestic IT market.
