FICCI moots offering incentives to cos employing SC/ST

Our Bureau

New Delhi , Sept. 3

THE Federation of Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) has suggested that instead of compulsory job reservations in the private sector for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST), the Government may consider offering incentives to business enterprises that have representation of these communities in their workforce.

The Chamber has suggested incentives such as tax-breaks and preference in Government procurement to those enterprises that employ the necessary number of people from such communities.

According to FICCI, the long-term solution will come only through effective measures for skill formation, entrepreneurial development and affirmative actions.

Such improvements would call for improvement in education and vocational trainings, it said.

Further, the Chamber is of the view that it should be left to the companies to voluntarily decide if employing designated percentage of SC/ST people is worth the incentives or not.

From the efficiency point of view, incentives which are any day a better option than a quota or reservation would not only be instrumental in achieving the socio-economic mobility of the target groups, but at the same time still leave the industry with enough room for flexibility and autonomy in business operations.
