Dankotuwa sets up shop in Chennai

Our Bureau

Chennai , Sept. 3

SRI Lanka's Dankotuwa Porcelain Ltd, which makes porcelain tableware, opened a showroom in Chennai. This is the company's first own showroom outside Sri Lanka.

The showroom would have an exhaustive collection of Dankotuwa's product range, said the company's Chairman, Mr Sunil G. Wijesinha, at a press conference. A feature of Dankotwa's products is that it is free of bone ash.

Mr Wijesinha said that the changing spending pattern in Chennai was a reason for the new showroom. In addition, a number of the company's customers in the Colombo showroom had come from Chennai.

He said that the company's products belonged to a niche. Their demand came from a desire for a particular lifestyle. In India, Dankotuwa's challenge would relate to positioning, he added.

Dankotuwa Porcelain was started in 1983, and is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange. The company is an associate of Japan's International Ceramic Inc. More than 80 per cent of its products are exported to Europe and the US.
