Input subsidy for AP ryots in drought-hit regions

Hyderabad , Sept. 3

AS a part of the drought relief measures, the State Government has prepared a contingency plan that includes a provision of input subsidy to farmers, distribution of subsidised fodder seed, supply of drinking water in villages, generation of employment in rural areas, sanction of drought pensions and execution of a special nutrition programme. The Government had declared 665 out of a total of 1128 mandals in the State as drought-affected.

According to an official press release here on Friday, the Agriculture Department proposes to cover 11.66 lakh hectares with 2.84 lakh quintals of seed of dry crops like jowar, castor, pulses, groundnut, sunflower, maize soyabean and horsegram. Similarly, the Animal Husbandry Department has planned to supply 4,500 tonnes of fodder seed on 75 per cent subsidy to cover 2.25 lakh acres in 15 districts.

The State Government has earmarked an amount of Rs 166.08 crore and already released Rs 92.68 crore to the Panchayat Raj Department for augmentation of drinking water supply in rural areas. An additional Rs 15 crore was sanctioned for tiding over the drinking water crisis in urban areas.

The Government has also announced 6 lakh drought pensions involving a monthly provision of 10 kg of rice per person for a period of six months from October to March. The value of rice to be supplied as pensions was estimated at Rs 32 crore. A sum of Rs 5 crore was also sanctioned for providing nutritious food for pregnant and lactating women and poor children.

These apart, the State Government was stated to have taken up measures to provide timely and cheap credit facilities for agriculturists. Farmers who have suffered production and income losses on account of successive droughts, floods or other calamities would be given debt relief and their loans would be rescheduled and restructured.
