Samsonite India to launch luggage with US-specific locking system

Bhubaneswar , Sept. 3

SAMSONITE India will soon manufacture a luggage with a special locking system to suit the need of the American people and those making frequent visits to the US. The new product, Silhouette-9, will be launched in December.

According to Dr Ramesh Tainwala, Chief Operating Officer of Somsonite India Ltd, the locking system to be used in Silhouette-9 has been approved by the Travel Safety Advisory (TSE) of the US.

The TSE-approved locking system would help the US Customs authorities check the luggage of any passenger by unlocking the Silhouette-9 with the master keys that will be supplied to them by the company, Dr Tainwala said. The master keys will be supplied to all the 1,400 Customs entry points in the US.

Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, Dr Tainwala said the company was hopeful of selling 2.5 lakh pieces of the Silhouetee-9 in the US market per annum. The product will be available in six different sizes and three colours.

Dr Tainwala, who was here to inaugurate an exclusive company outlet, said that Silhouette-9 would also be sold in the company's exclusive outlets in India for the benefit of those visiting the US. The company has 143 exclusive outlets in the country at present and the number is likely to increase to 165 by the end of 2005.

About the company's annual turnover, Dr Tainwala said it was likely to be Rs 130 crore this year, and around Rs 250 crore in 2005.

In the premium segment, the company had a market share of 68 per cent at present, he said.
