Electronic filing of IT returns soon in Karnataka

Our Bureau

Mangalore , Sept. 3

IN a bid to make filing of income-tax people-friendly, the I-T Department is considering a proposal on electronic filing.

According to the Commissioner of Income-Tax (Appeals), Mangalore, Mr Aravind Pinto, the department is planning to introduce electronic IT filing facility for taxpayers. The facility, which is likely to be launched soon, will be another addition to the people-friendly initiatives launched by the department.

Delivering a lecture on `New income-tax guidelines: User-friendly for compliance' organised by the Mangalore-Manipal chapter of Public Relations Society of India (PRSI) here, Mr Pinto said that salaried taxpayers in some metro cities can get I-T returns electronically on their bank accounts.

Once the return is processed, the refund, if any, will be credited to the bank account indicated in the return of income.

The Central Board of Direct Taxes has notified the modified form 2E for salary returns in this regard. This form contains columns for providing details of bank accounts. These exercises are part of the department's efforts to make I-T people-friendly, he said.

Over the years the department has attempted to streamline the procedures on I-T filing. As a result of this, SARAL form was introduced to make filing simpler for the common man.

In spite of such initiatives, the department's image is yet to get a boost. He said that lack of direct communication between the department officials and the taxpayer might be one of the reasons for the poor image among the public.
