ENVIRONMENTAL activists on Friday called for the setting up of an independent monitoring and evaluation body, comprising community and civil society representatives that can ensure environmental sensitivity in decision-making regarding various projects that affect the environment.
Expressing serious concern over the Government's "systematic undermining" of environmental issues, experts said the attitude of the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) seems to a "rubber stamp" to the outlook of the corporate and business class, in spite of its impact being destructive.
The Government, they alleged, was being dictated by the "development lobby" and was moving towards "unbridled modernisation" without addressing environmental concerns. "Development does not mean brushing aside future concerns, which lie in a healthy environment around us. The undermining of nature had led to the passing of several projects without even proper verification," said the Director, Centre for Equity Studies, Mr Shekhar Singh.
