US job market brightens in Aug

Sridhar Krishnaswami

Washington , Sept. 4

IN a report that the incumbent President, Mr George W Bush, is expected to go to town with, the Labour department said that the economy picked up in August adding 1,44,000 jobs only slightly less than the 1,50,000 figure forecast by economists. The unemployment rate has dipped to 5.4 per cent down from 5.5 per cent in July.

Analysts are pointing to the fact that the gain in payrolls for August is the biggest jobs gain since May and that payrolls are growing for the last 12 months in a row.

The Statistics have also been revised for July and the figure is now pegged at 73,000 jobs added for the month, an improvement from the 32,000 estimated earlier.
