HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, directed the officials of the State Girijan Co-operative Corporation (GCC) to undertake market intervention steps so as make available seeded tamarind at Rs 12 per kg for the consumers.

Dr Reddy's instructions in this regard comes in the light of the tamarind price shooting up to Rs 40 a kg.

According to an official press release, the Chief Minister had asked the GCC officials to open tamarind sale counters at various office complexes in cities and also start supplying the commodity through mobile vans in all urban areas at Rs 12 per kg.

Earlier, the GCC officials informed Dr Reddy that 16,000 quintals of tamarind was available with the corporation which was being sold through ryuthu bazaars and its own sales outlets in Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram and Srikakulam districts. The GCC, however, was selling the seeded tamarind at Rs 16 per kg and de-seeded variety at Rs 25 kg. Now, it has to reduce the price as per the instructions of the Chief Minister.
