Tata Motors sales up 21 pc in Aug

TATA Motors on Monday reported a 21-per cent increase in total vehicle sales (including export) for August 2004 to 30,113 units as compared to the previous corresponding period.

According to an official statement, cumulative sales for the April-August 2004 period stood at 1,45,088 units, a gain of 32 per cent over the year ago level of 1,10,216 units.

Domestic commercial vehicle sales in August grew 14 per cent to 13,682 units (11,990 units for the year ago period), including a 16-per cent rise in M&HCV sales to 9,368 units and a 10-per cent growth in LCV sales to 4,314 units. Total commercial vehicle sales in the domestic market for the April-August 2004 period rose 33.5 per cent to 66,774 units (50,015 units).

In passenger cars, the company reported a 19.7-per cent rise in sales for August to 13,966 units.

"Sales were impacted to an extent by the disruption of dispatches due to the transporters' strike," the statement said. Total domestic sales for the April-August 2004 period amounted to 70,022 units, a growth of 29.7 per cent.

Indica sales for the just ended month rose 21.6 per cent to 8,350 units with cumulative sales for the fiscal so far at 43,200 units, a rise of 33.5 per cent. Indigo returned sales of 3,081 units last month, crossing alongside the milestone of 50,000 units sold.

"This achievement in a short span of 20 months since launch would be the fastest for any sedan in the industry," the statement said. Cumulative sales for Indigo this fiscal at 15,348 units are growing at 42 per cent.

Utility vehicle sales at 2,355 units for August grew three per cent over the year ago period with total sales for the fiscal at 11,474 units being up six per cent.

Exports for August touched 2,465 units (1,167 units) and the total for April-August, 8,292 units (6,232 units), a growth of 33 per cent.
