Samba cultivation picks up in Cauvery delta

Our Correspondent

Madurai , Sept. 6

THE agricultural operations like ploughing, raising nurseries and transplantation of crops are slowly picking up in the Cauvery delta districts of Thanjavur and Tiruvarur, thanks to the reach of water to tail-end areas coupled with rainfall.

According to the Joint Director of Agriculture, Mr Navaneetha Krishnan, samba is to be raised on 1,25,000 hectares in Thanjavur district. Nursery has been raised so far on 4,710 hectares against a target of 12,000 hectares and transplantation has been completed in about 100 hectares.

In Tiruvarur, the plan is to raise samba on 1,30,000 hectares. Nursery has been raised on 1,880 hectares. Farmers in tail-end areas have adopted direct sowing.

In both the districts, kuruvai harvest is going on. Against a total covered area of 24,136 hectares, harvest has been completed in 3,044 hectares in Thanjavur, the sources added.
