DIGITAL camera sales world over registered a whopping 61 per cent growth last year.
Of the 109 million cameras sold in 2003, about 49 million were digital ones.
Though analogue cameras continued to dominate the market with sales of 57 million pieces, the demand for these traditional cameras fell by 16 per cent, according to Mr P.V.N. Moorthy, President of All-India Photographic Trade and Industry Association.
Quoting a global study conducted by German research company GfK, Mr Moorthy said the number of films sold worldwide dropped by five per cent. He, however, felt that the trend was mostly related to the Western markets. "Emerging markets like India are still witnessing significant growth in analogue cameras and film sales," he said.
Nearly 2.5-3 lakh digital cameras were sold in India last year. "Drop in prices of digital cameras will propel sales," Mr Moorthy said.
He was talking to reporters after inaugurating the second Photo Expo - 2004 here on Thursday.
The three-day expo features over 500 products from 65 participants, covering the spectrum of photographic industry.
Mr Jayesh Mehta, Secretary of the association, said the industry was overburdened by a series of taxes, the latest being the service tax.
