THE formalities of getting the Indian Pharmacopeia Commission operationalised is underway, according to Mr Ashwini Kumar, Drug Controller-General of India (DCGI).
Speaking at the two-day pharmaceutical analysts convention here in Mumbai, Mr Kumar said that the IP Commission will become a reality soon. Later, while speaking to media persons, he said that the IP Commission would publish the standards against which medicines could be benchmarked. As part of the Union Health Ministry's capacity-building project, the fund for the IP Commission had been provided and a board would be instituted too, he said.
Meanwhile, Dr Roger Williams, Executive Vice-President and Chief Executive Officer of the US Pharmacopoeia, said that developing standards for biogeneric products and meeting the US regulatory standards would be the challenge for the pharma industry.
The US regulations are complicated, especially for biological products, he said, and added that they were contemplating a change in law to have a more scientific approach to handle biological sources.
The convention was organised by the Indian Drug Manufacturers Association.
