Plea to raise budgetary allocation for Karnataka tourism

Our Bureau

Bangalore , Sept.10

BUDGETARY allocation for tourism should be enhanced to meet the commitments for promoting tourism in the State. A suggestion has been made to the Government to enhance the allocation to Rs 55 crore from the current Rs 17. 6 crore, said Mr Mahendra Jain, Commissioner Tourism.

He said the allocation for tourism was inadequate and there was only a marginal increase from previous year's Rs 16.4 crore. The State had in fact overshot the allocated amount, he said underlining the need for more funds.

He said the efforts to promote tourism had paid off with the tourist arrivals recording a 15 per cent growth last year. The State had 3.2 lakh foreign visitors and 1.2 crore domestic tourists.

Mr Jain said the arrivals in the first few months for the current fiscal indicated the growth could be more than last year.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday to announce a Painters Camp to be held at Hampi as part of the Tourism Department's efforts to make Karnataka a preferred destination, Mr Jain said about 20 eminent artists from Kolkata, Mumbai and Delhi would be attending the six-day event from October 10 to 15.

"A cultural extravaganza depicting the essence of Karnataka has been planned ."

The six day camp will also be interspersed with activities such as visit to the bear sanctuary, boat ride in the river Thungabhadra, trekking and tours to Badami, Aihole and Pattadakal , Mr Jain said.

An international cultural festival has also been planned as a sequel to the painters' camp .
