Sensex up 71 on all-round buying

THE stock markets witnessed a sharp rally today with the BSE Sensex closing at the highest level since the `Black Monday' on May 17. The stocks witnessed all-round buying, with both institutions and retail investors participating.

The Sensex opened at 5,305.42 and touched a high of 5,376.65 before closing the day's trade at 5,370.05, an appreciation of 1.36 per cent. Similarly, at the NSE, the Nifty gained 1.20 per cent to close at 1,668.75, up almost 20 points up from Thursday's close of 1,649 points.

Volumes continued to be low. The NSE registered trade of 24.02 crore shares, while only 16.15 crore shares changed hands at the BSE. Sectors like steel, auto, IT, and pharma rallied strongly on the bourses.
