Kerala rubber growers stage `dharna'

Our Bureau

KOTTAYAM: Rubber growers belonging to Nationalist Karshaka Congress staged a dharna in front of the Rubber Board headquarters here in protest against lifting of ban on NR import and reduction of export subsidy.

The State General Secretary of the Congress, Mr Uzhavoor Vijayan, alleged on the occasion that the Union Commerce Ministry had become an anti-farmer body.

Mr M.J. Ummen, President, Nationalist Karshaka Congress, and several leaders from various farmers' organisations spoke. Irrespective of their political loyalty, the leaders criticised the action taken by the Commerce Minister and cautioned that such steps would weaken the rubber plantation industry in India. Earlier, the rubber growers took out a procession in the town before staging dharna at the Board's headquarters.
