Hyderabad , Sept. 12

THE Telugu film industry has got a shot in the arm with the Government agreeing to set up a high-level committee to look into the issue of piracy and recommend measures to curb the menace in the State.

Announcing this here on Saturday, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, Chief Minister, said the committee would comprise film producers and the Managing Director of Andhra Pradesh State Film Television and Theatre Development Corporation Ltd.

He said the committee would constitute in a week. "We will take necessary measures to curb the menace following the recommendations," he said.

He also suggested that film producers constitute a taskforce on the lines of the one on audio piracy. This taskforce could tip the Government on the video piracy activities, enabling the enforcing authorities to take legal action.

The Chief Minister was talking to a delegation from the film industry, which submitted a memorandum urging the former to take measures to curb video piracy.

The delegation comprised Chiranjeevi, G. Krishna, G. Adiseshagiri Rao, Vijayanirmala, Nagarjuna, Allu Aravind and Mahesh Babu.

The move by the film industry came in the wake of a row involving Mahesh Babu-starred Arjun. Hundreds of fans of the actor went berserk and damaged a videocassette library at Warangal last week. The library allegedly circulated pirated CDs of Arjun. The police later booked a kidnap case on Mahesh Babu.

The delegation asked the Government to bring video piracy into the purview of Andhra Pradesh Control of Organised Crime Act.
