L&T-Niro sees more activity once food laws are enacted

Ch. Prashanth Reddy

Hyderabad , Sept. 13

L&T-Niro Ltd (LTN), a joint venture between L&T and Niro A/S of Denmark, envisages that its scope of operations will enlarge once the Union Government enacts food laws.

LTN is engaged in supplying equipment for powder producing and processing applications for industries such as food & dairy, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

"Our focus is on supplying fully automated global quality processing plants at the lowest possible cost. This activity is expected to increase once the Food Laws, imposing stringent quality norms, are enacted by the Government," the Chief Executive of LTN, Mr Kapil Kumar, told Business Line.

Speaking on the sidelines of the International FoodTec exhibition at HITEX here, Mr Kumar said that five dairies of 5-lakh litres per day (LPD) milk processing capacity should come up annually to tap the potential in India, the largest producer of milk in the world.

However, at present, only one dairy of 5 lakh LPD was being set up in the country once in three years. Only 15 per cent of the total milk production was currently being processed and hence India's export of milk and milk products was less than one per cent.

He said that LTN had received orders worth Rs 120 crore this year as against Rs 107 crore last year. The company would be commissioning next week a 10,000-LPD fully automatic yoghurt and laban processing plant being set for the Yemen Dairy and Juice Industry.

By next year, the company would be completing the "Asia's largest" milk powder plant being established by the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation at Gandhinagar. The plant would have the capacity to produce 100 tonnes of milk powder per day. LTN is also currently executing a 20-tonne- per-day (TPD) capacity milk powder plant at Godhra in Gujarat and supplying a 30-TPD powder plant to Sterling Agro of Gwalior.

Mr Kumar said that LTN, which offers total solutions from concept to commissioning, has a competitive edge as it has the technical expertise of L&T's in-house business units as well as "unlimited access" to the latest technological knowhow from global leaders.
