Medical Institutions & Hospitals New cancer hospital coming up in Pune Sudha Menon
Pune , Sept. 13 PUNE will soon be home to the largest cancer hospital in the country with the Grant Medical Foundation's Ruby Hall clinic starting work on the project. The Rs 42-crore project is being undertaken with part sponsorship by Pune businessmen Mr Zavary and Mr Cyrus Poonawalla, Deputy Managing Trustees of Ruby Hall Clinic, Dr Parvez Grant, told Business Line. Dr Grant said the proposed hospital, to be housed in a new seven storey complex, will be commissioned in 12-14 months and will offer modern facilities and equipment for cancer treatment. "When completed, the project will be the largest such facility in the country, and we expect a large number of outstation patientsto come in for treatment," Dr Grant said, adding that treatment will largely be offered on a day-care basis. "We plan to offer subsidised or free treatment for the needyat this hospital too," he said. The Poonawalla Cancer Care Centre will have cancer diagnostic and treatment facilities, consulting rooms for medical, surgical and radiation oncologists, radiation therapy facilities and a day care centre for chemotherapy. It will also have image guided radiation therapy facilities for delivery of the precise dose of radiation to tumours. Meanwhile, Ruby Medical Consultancy Services, a subsidiary of Ruby Medical Services (a company promoted by Dr Grant to provide professionally managed health care services) is all set to take over the management of Terna Medical College, at Nerul, near Mumbai. An MoU has been signed with the Terna authorities, whereby the medical college's 500-bed hospital will be converted into a speciality hospital that will have cardiology, cardiac surgery, nephrology and urology units. Dr Grant said the hospital, which has been set up at an investment of Rs 22 crore, would see a fresh infusion of funds to bring about the necessary upgradation. The hospital will be operational in November 2004, he said. Ruby Medical Services is on the lookout for acquiring hospitals in Mumbai and other areas in Maharashtra, which can be upgraded into high-quality medical facilities. The company runs full-fledged diagnostic centres that offer services such as CT scans, colour doppler at nine towns in Maharashtra, including Karad and Phaltan. It is also looking at places such as Narayangaon, Daund, Indapur, Satara for the near future. "There is a huge demand for quality diagnostic facilities in second and third rung towns across Maharashtra, and we are offering these on a franchisee basis with trained staff who work under our supervision and management," Dr Grant said. The company is working with the Sahara group to set up a 100-bed hospital at its luxurious mountain-top resort, Amby Valley, at Lonavala in Maharashtra, Dr Grant said. He said the company is offering the group consultancy for every aspect of the project from planning, staffing, equipment to managing the hospital.
