Brick kiln owners seek waiver of fly ash norms

THE Southern Regional Brick Manufacturers' Association has sought exemption from the compulsory mixing of fly ash with mud for making bricks.
The Association President, Mr Yasin Mohammed, in a memorandum to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, said blending up to 25 per cent has been made compulsory by the Union Ministry for Environment, though experiments have proved the same as unviable. While on the one hand, people do not prefer blended bricks, they also pose a health hazard to the workers, he said. He added that the brick kiln owners are affected by the propaganda by vested interests that they employed child labourers and bonded labourers and they are forced to pay heavy penalties. If the children of the workers stayed with them in the kiln, would that amount to engaging child labour, he said.
As the industry could not find permanent workers, jobless farmers are employed as an alternative. Labour laws, therefore, could not be followed in letter and spirit and the Government should exempt brick kiln owners from the application of the stringent laws.
