THE Fertiliser Association of India (FAI) has projected a higher demand for fertilisers this year compared to the previous fiscal, despite the general perception that the floods and droughts during the current fiscal will result in relatively lower demand.
In the industry outlook for 2004-05, released by FAI on Monday, the association has said that the overall fertiliser consumption is expected to show a marked improvement during 2004-05 over the modest growth in the previous year.
According to fertiliser sales for the April-July 2004 period, sale of urea, di-ammonium phosphate (DAP) and muriate of potash (MoP) have increased by 17.8 per cent, 69.8 per cent and 57.2 per cent, respectively.
According to the data provided by FAI, good rains have increased the water availability in the 71 major reservoirs. The water available in these reservoirs as on August 13, was 55.77 billion cubic metres (BCM), which is 4.93 BCM more than what was available on the same date last year.
This higher availability of water as a result of good rains during the latter part of southwest monsoon has given rise to the prospects of reasonably good agriculture coverage and production during the ensuing rabi season.
