Tobacco Industry & Economy - Education No tobacco sale near schools Nithya Subramanian
New Delhi, Sept. 13 FOLLOWING a ban on sale of tobacco products to minors and smoking in public places, the Health Ministry has recently notified prohibition on sale of cigarettes and tobacco products around educational institutions. According to the rules, the owner or manager or any person in-charge of affairs of an educational institution will conspicuously exhibit a board stating that the sale of cigarettes and other tobacco products in an area within a radius of 100 yards of the educational institution is strictly prohibited and is a punishable offence with a fine, which may be extended to Rs 200. The 100 yards would be measured radially starting from the outer limit of the boundary, wall or fence. The educational institutions will get about three months to comply with the new rule, which will come into force from December 1, 2004.
