Themis seeks partners to market Nimesulide globally

P.T. Jyothi Datta

Mumbai , Sept. 14

THE brouhaha over the safety of Nimesulide notwithstanding, the Gujarat-based Themis Medicare Ltd is looking to take its injectible form of the popular fever medicine to global markets.

The company has received the approval of the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) to manufacture and market Nimesulide injection 75 mg/ml, a new drug delivery system in the analgesic and anti-pyretic segment, the company told the BSE on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Dr Dinesh S. Patel, Managing Director and CEO, told Business Line that the company was talking to Indian and European companies to market the product.

Elaborating on the controversies related to the safety of the drug, particularly in children, and the ban on the product in some global markets, he said: "This product is not to be used in children, we are very clear about that. But the analgesic use of the drug has been proved and some European nations have re-introduced it. In fact, we are in talks with some European companies. In India too, about five companies have approached us to market the product and we hope to firm up plans by the end of the month."

On the efficacy of the new product, he said, "We have done clinical trials on the product both as an analgesic and antibiotic. It would be useful for patients who cannot take the drug orally and in post-operative care."
