Passenger car sales up 18 pc in August

PASSENGER car sales increased by 18.1 per cent in August 2004, as a slew of new launches and easy finance schemes helped drive the industry forward.

A total of 62,846 cars were sold in the month compared to over 53,177 units in August last year, according to data released on Tuesday by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM).

Maruti Udyog posted a rise of 28.2 per cent at 32,135 units, while Hyundai Motor India registered a decline of 11 per cent due to supply-related problems as it was in the process of raising production capacity at its facility.

Tata Motors, India's third biggest carmaker, saw sales soar 23.7 per cent at 11,611 units.

Meanwhile, commercial vehicle sales went up by 16.5 per cent at 23,269 units in the month against 19,962 units in August 2003. Within the segment, sales of medium and heavy (M&H) buses and trucks grew by 13.8 per cent at 14,201 units while that of light commercial vehicles (LCVs) was up by 21 per cent at 9,068 units.

Two-wheeler sales continued to remain bullish, growing by 13 per cent at 4.71 lakh units as motorcycle and step-thru sales grew by 14.5 per cent at 3.63 lakh units.

Hero Honda posted 30.8 per cent rise at 1.87 lakh units while Bajaj Auto registered a jump of 38.6 per cent at 1.01 lakh units.

The scooter and scooterette market, which is in revival mode, posted a rise of 11.6 per cent at 81,348 units while moped sales slipped by 2.55 per cent at 26,481 units.

Honda Motorcycle Scooter India posted a massive 67.2 per cent growth at 40,262 units while sales of Bajaj Auto dipped 34.1 per cent at 11,649 units in the category.
