Brands HLL's packaged tea brands become dearer Surf Excel Quick Wash sachet also costs more Sindhu J. Bhattacharya
New Delhi , Sept. 16 AFTER colas, it's packaged tea and detergents. Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) has increased prices of all its packaged tea brands. Also, in a surprise move, the company has initiated a 50-paise increase in Surf Excel Quick Wash sachet taking its price to Rs 2. So, while the Red Label Leaf Tea is now dearer by Rs 2 at Rs 47 for a 250 gram pack, Taaza Leaf has seen a Rs 2.50 price increase for the same pack and Taj Leaf is expensive by a rupee. And though the price hike in 250 gram packs have stayed below the 5 per cent level, it could be higher for larger packs, industry sources said here. The price rise by an established player such as HLL comes amid hardening tea auction prices due to a constrained supply position. However, it could not be ascertained whether other branded players would follow suit. On why the company had decided to reverse the price war in detergents by increasing detergent sachet prices, industry sources said recent inflationary pressure including rising costs of raw materials, and transportation, among others, has resulted in HLL taking the plunge. They said other FMCG products could also cost more in the coming days. Meanwhile, crying foul over rising input costs, soft drinks majors Coca-Cola and Pepsi have already effected a Rs 2 price hike in select markets in both, 200 ml and 300 ml pack sizes.
